     This painting is by the artist Ro. It follows in the tradition of a painting by the artist Kano Hogai called the "Compassionate Kannon." Kano Hogai's influence was extraordinary in the Meiji period. This image was an attempt to synthesize the new concept of Christianity and Buddhism.
