Throw Net Fisherman by Lionel Walden

In 1911, the accomplished artist Lionel Walden came to Hawaii and began a remarkable career of seascapes and paintings in collaboration with D. Howard Hitchcock. By 1933 he had died and left a body of work in Hawaiian subjects that are the most sought after of all paintings in Hawaii. This painting of the Hawaiian Throw Net Fisherman is his greatest masterpiece. The original of this painting was in the ballroom of the luxury liner, Matsonia until 1940 when the ship was decommissioned for wartime use. All the fittings and contents of the ship were put into storage in Los Angeles. In the early 1950s, this painting was sold and remained in a private collection for 50 years.
